Two Versions
Fans of the “Birthright of Scars” duology are looking forward to a dual edition release of the prequel. While the immersive version has been the focus since funding began in 2024, the traditional version will also be released alongside it for listeners who find ambience and sound effects to be distracting, or want to listen at higher speeds.
Immersive vs Traditional
Most immersive audiobooks are abridgements or adaptations that remove the narration and favor dialogue. This makes many graphic audiobooks sound like one is listening to a movie. And sometimes scenes with a lot of chaotic action and dialogue between multiple characters gets messy and confusing.
For audiobook lovers, traditional audiobooks bring them the depth of a character’s internal world through the narration. They often want to experience the same story they read on the page.
But there is a third group of audiobook enthusiasts out there. The atmospheric audiobook lover.
Atmospheric Audio
Atmospheric Audiobooks fall into the immersive audio category. But they pull the best from Graphic adaptations and traditional audiobooks.
- They’re word for word the same as the novel in print.
- They may have multiple narrators, a full, or partial cast voicing prominent characters.
- They’re sound-scaped, but the sound effects don’t overpower the narration or dialogue.
These books are traditional audiobooks with sprinkles.
Immersive Audiobooks are popular in the Sci-Fi genre, among others with unique worldbuilding, because the ambient soundscaping and custom sound effects help the reader visualize and experience a world very different from our own. Alien flora and fauna, for example, or alien technologies prevalent in sci-fi. These enhancements also lend themselves well to novels with greater thematic scope and breadth and higher action.
How Will Each Version Be Distributed?
Distribution plans have not been set in stone yet. However, having two versions does allow more flexibility for publication.
Currently, the plan is to release one version wide and through my webstore. This will make the audiobook available to consumers on 40+ multiple major platforms, such as Libro.fm, Apple, Google Play, Audible, Hoopla, OverDrive, Chirp, Spotify, Barnes & Noble, and so on.
I am considering releasing the other version exclusively through Audible for a set period of time. This is a big decision that I am still carefully considering.
I am hopeful that my audiobooks will be picked up by Libraries also. But that is up to the libraries where there are reader requests for the book.
